Feeding & Care

Do not feed birds fruit seeds, avocados, chocolate, onions, apple seeds, uncooked beans, uncooked rice, alcohol or caffeine as these can cause serious medical problems, and kill them

A Calico's diet should consist of 70% pellets, 30% fresh fruit & veggies.

They need a lot of daily social interaction so they can bond with your "flock" both direct face to face, and indirect just being around the family.

They can be very destructive which is why they need a variety of toys to keep them mentally stimulated, and from getting bored which can lead to self mutilation.

They need a variety of different sized perches to help exercise, and stretch their feet.

Description

Calico Macaws are a 1st generation hybrid which means that both of their parents are naturally occuring Macaws. The parents of a Calico Macaw are a Greenwing Macaw bred with a Military Macaw which is why they have such a striking color variation. The Greenwing Macaw side of a Calico makes it a very affectionate, and loving bird while the Military Macaw side makes them very inquisitive. They don't want to snuggle or cuddle quite as much as a Greenwing Macaw does, but they due pick up training, and tricks very quickly like a Militry Macaw.

They live 60 to 85 years, and some even older due to modern healthier diets, exercise, and mental stimulation. Macaws are not a parrot for first time bird owners, and a lot of thought, and consideration should go into the idea of getting one for a companion bird.
